The importance of vitamin D

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is essential for our health. It is important for strong bones, muscles and teeth and it has a positive impact on the immune system. Our body can produce vitamin D from sunlight, however, to do so you need to be outside for 15 minutes to half an hour every day between 11am and 3pm. Moreover, in a lot of countries the sun is only powerful enough to produce vitamin D during the months of May to October. Babies, children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with dark skin in particular are more likely not to produce enough vitamin D themselves.

How do liposomal supplements work?

In liposomal supplements, the active ingredients are packaged in very small, fat-like spheres called liposomes. This advanced, patented technique has several advantages:

  • Liposomes protect the active ingredients from being broken down by gastric acid, among other things
  • The active substances are not released directly into the bloodstream until further down the gastrointestinal tract
  • Liposomes ensure better absorption of fat-soluble vitamins in the body

By wrapping vitamin D in liposomes, the vitamin is protected from degradation and only delivered via the bloodstream later in the gastrointestinal tract. Because the body sees liposomes as the body's own cells, the vitamin D enters our body cells directly. Therefore, the liposomal form provides protection and a better, more direct and complete absorption of vitamin D.

What is the difference between vitamin D2 and D3?

Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is found in nature only in animal sources, such as fish oil, butter and egg yolk, although nowadays vitamin D3 can also be extracted from algae and lichen via costly, advanced techniques. Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) is found only in plant sources such as mushrooms and fungi exposed to sunlight. Our own skin also produces vitamin D3 from sunlight. The difference between the two forms of vitamin D is mainly in their absorbability. Several studies show that vitamin D3 is much more effective in increasing vitamin D status in the body. Vitamin D3 is also converted faster than vitamin D2. Vitamin D3 is therefore the most physiologically active form that is completely identical to the body's own vitamin D.

Is vitamin D3 vegetarian?

Most D3 supplements are made from sheep's wool fat, or lanolin. After a sheep is sheared, the wool is boiled to ensure that the wool fat melts and detaches from the wool. The wool can now be further processed for other purposes. To produce vitamin D, the wool fat is exposed to sunlight or UV light. Wool fat is suitable for vegetarians because it is a by-product of wool production. Moreover, only little sheep's wool is needed to produce vitamin D3. It is therefore an efficient and sustainable process. Vegans can opt for the plant-based, but less effective form, vitamin D2. There is also vegan vitamin D3 extracted from lichen or algae. However, this is an expensive process compared to the production of vitamin D3 from sheep's wool fat.

Optimal quality and absorbability

When choosing a vitamin D supplement, it is important to consider the quality, dosage and absorbability. After all, not all vitamin D is absorbed well by the body. With Vitamin D3 Liposomal from Ergomax, you can be sure you're in the right place. It contains vitamin D in the body-identical form, namely vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). Compared to vitamin D2, vitamin D3 is better at increasing and retaining vitamin D in the body.

The supplement also has a liposomal form, which means the vitamin is delivered directly into the bloodstream. In terms of dosage, a high but safe dosage of 2000 IU, or 50 micrograms per capsule, has been chosen. The maximum dosage in supplements in 75 micrograms per day, so this puts you well below this upper limit, but high enough to maintain optimal levels of vitamin D in the body.
